i know this plant as arrowhead and it started life as an indoor plant.

at death's door, almost killed by kindness, it was relegated to a quiet spot at the feet of my sasanqua camellia hedge where it was promptly forgotten and utterly neglected.

it has now taken over a large area, is lush and healthy

perhaps it's an approach that should be applied to the rest of the garden!

with all this talk of scraps and scrap projects it might be time to bust my scrap box
besides there's unpicking to do on the swap quilt

where's the fun in that?!

now it's rather a pathetic collection but that's because...

so 2.5in squares, 3in squares (there's a mistake on the label - remind me to complain to management), 5in squares, 2.5in strips and strings

you know even the ugliest fabric is tolerable as a 3in square

once there is a nice collection then these projects look pretty tempting

feeling rather guilty that i hadn't touched these especially after all the love and care my swap partners put in to making them

it was great fun to get them out and re-read all the lovely cards that came with them

they are sewn into rows now with one inch sashings and corner stones

hope to find just the right fabric for the setting triangles today

it was such a tough decision to choose a layout especially after seeing katiemaytoo's, theri's and canuckquilter's versions

This beautiful quilt is Beth - a BOM from the talented designer Carol Roberts of Cherry Pie Designs.

I had the pleasure of meeting Carol at a quilt show a couple of years ago where she had a stand full of wonderful patterns and fabric goodies. I bought her design Amelia Jane and one of these days I'll make it up!

This is Carol's version and it was on display at the quilt show.

Carol has some lovely designs on her website and is offering Beth as a pattern only but you can buy a pattern/fabric version from The Stitching Post.

Makin' Do

New stars have been added to the collection after I found some pretty French General fabric from the Rural Jardin range.

After stopping by another fabric shop, I added some fabrics from the Minick & Simpson range - Clermont Farms, as well as a Michele Hill blue print from her range - Adelaide.

Oddly enough, three of the stores I visited told me they weren't stocking Moda fabrics any more. When asked why, they said everyone buys Moda online. Do they?

I'll admit to buying pre-cuts on line but rarely yardage and even though our dollar is so strong, I'm trying to stay loyal to local quilt shops. I like to see the fabrics and enjoy the personal, friendly service.

What a shame if we were to lose our quilt shops altogether. Support your local store - today.

Diamonds Are Forever

Well, these will last a while to be sure. This is my *in-between* project while the winter keeps me out of the sewing room.

(Couldn't be anything to do with the fact it's a mess in there)

I've had the idea for this quilt for a little while now but was spurred on when I read Pam Bunda's article about make-do quilts in the April issue of American Patchwork & Quilting.

How funky is that cover quilt?! May have to put that on the to-do list as well.

I'll be adding a soft white to the mix when I find the right one. Hmm, I feel a shop hop coming on.....

I'm A Happy Bunny

It's been that weekend when you can eat all the chocolate you want - guilt free!

I have a finished quilt top.

The sewing machine is lint-less, has a sharp new needle and there are plenty of freshly wound bobbins ready to quilt the baby quilt.

The crock pot has been dusted off to make braised lamb shanks with parmesan mash

There's also chicken noodle soup and apple berry crisp.

She sighs with contentment

Now on matters quilting...the plan was to make a Lemoyne Star but I rather fancy Carpenter's Wheel instead.

What about this feisty little number seen on Material Obsession's blog?

Or perhaps the vintage look?

Back in the Saddle Again

So sang Gene Autry. I know how he felt because I managed to have some time at the sewing machine this week for the first time since last November.

Whoo-hoo!

It meant that I finished my basket blocks. Yeahhh!

The pattern is from Kim Brackett's Scrap Basket Surprises book. Kim has a new book out called Scrap Basket Sensations and there is a Flickr group where you can post pix of your finished projects from either volume. Plenty of incentive to finish this quilt now.

The fabric range is Simple Abundance by Bonnie and Camille and I used a layer cake from Busy Thimbles as well as a little yardage. Busy Thimbles has some fabulous new fabrics in their online store - check out the Civil War reproductions and great new patterns.

Here are my swap blocks from Breezy Bree. I received them last year but hadn't got around to posting them. Sorry for the delay Karen.

Aren't they fabulous! Such a pop of colour. Soon I will be able to start putting my swap quilt together. Theri, Katie and Joanne have pieced their tops and I think are already quilting them. Fantastic!

Under the Sea

This is the last thing I managed to sew before life went into free fall last November.

It's a Moda Bakeshop design using Moda's Odyssea fabric range. The quilt uses a charm pack so it's economical and I always like an excuse to make pinwheels.

Now I just need to find the right backing fabric. Hmmm...dots, spots, stripes or a tonal print?

Are you like me in that regard? Fussy about your backing fabric. Looking in every shop or online till you find just the right thing.

Laurel Hermon's design appeared in Creating Country Threads (Vol 9 No 11). I have made some small changes.

This Christmas Angel will be winging her way to her new home soon. It has been good to make some inroads in my Christmas sewing plans.

Did you miss me? I sure missed all of you. I feel like I have been away from this blog for an age and so much has been happening. You have all been so busy.

I haven't sewn for so long that I'm not sure I would recognise a needle and thread if I stood on one!

Some wonderful swap blocks came from Theri amidst all the chaos and they are wonderful. Have you seen Theri's design and layout for her swap blocks? Isn't she clever?

I did manage to spend a pleasurable few hours at a local quilt show the other weekend. The quilts were amazing. I liked so many of them and was honoured to have some of the quilt makers tell me about the inspiration for their work, the difficulties they encountered finding just the right fabric and the pleasure they had in completing their quilt.

I thought I would show you the pincushions I made for my swap partner. For some reason she hasn't posted pictures on Flickr. Strange, but perhaps her computer is misbehaving. Been there, done that.

This was a pattern in the issue of Quilts & More I received in the block swap. You can find the online version of the pattern here.

This one is from the book Quilts as Gifts. I really enjoyed making both.

Christine also made a gorgeous folded fabric needle book and a tatted ornament. I love tatting! She included the pattern for the pincushion so I can share the love. There are loads of other treats as well.

What Do You Get When...

...you cross a quilt with a pillow? A quillow!

I'm making one for my nephew who has some hospital visits coming up and he's mad keen on lizards.

I'm adding some handles to make it easy to carry. This is the pillow top waiting to be quilted. I'll use a multi coloured thread and meander stitch. The backing is a soft flannel. Nice for snuggling.

More swap blocks have arrived and they are such delightful parcels.

I really like all the fabrics used especially that funky lime green.

There is a sweet wool bookmark to stitch, a super needle keeper that folds out and a nice magazine to thumb through over coffee.

Just a little peek-a-boo

Well, we can't have the reveal until my swap partner receives them now can we?

I have made the pincushions for the Pincushion Swap and will be posting some goodies to my swap partner this week. I do hope she likes everything!

I stopped by the quilt fabric shop last weekend and this little bundle of lovelies needed a new home.

Our fat quarters are a little bigger here - 20 x 22 inches - so these beauties are equivalent to a layer cake and for $2 each a good buy.

I'm just doing my bit for the economy.

Waste Not...Want Not

I just couldn't bear to throw away these little half square triangles leftover from making the basket blocks. I think there is a miniature Ann Hermes quilt in there somewhere....

Here is a basket block with its borders. I'm finding it difficult to be random with the fabric selection. I have an overwhelming desire to be too fussy. Must resist temptation...must be strong...

Last, but by no means least, here is my last set of swap blocks. Beth, I have posted yours. Theri and Kathleen - I shall be posting yours this week.

I have joined the Slow Poke Quilters and not just because some folks say I'm slow. They are a group of delightful girls who hand piece all their quilts and I feel the need to start a hand piecing project. Stay tuned for details.

Show and Tell No# 2

I am so happy with this quilt. Not only did I enjoying piecing it but I decided to have it professionally quilted because of its size - 68 inches square.

The pattern is called Irish Swirls and was stitched in pale blue thread.

The quilter has done such a good job. As I sewed down the binding I kept getting cravings for chocolate.

I can't imagine why...

Check this post for the original design idea. While I liked Late Bloomer, I wasn't completely sold on the idea. Can't really tell you why - it just didn't feel right in the end. I would like to make up Late Bloomer, just in different fabrics.

Then Rachel (p.s.iquilt) held a pinwheel quilt along using this fabric and I do like a pinwheel but I still wasn't convinced. It wasn't until I saw these blocks on Sister's Choice Quilts that I knew I had found the inspiration for my design. Nicole is using a Schnibbles design by Carrie Nelson. She makes a phenomenal number of beautiful quilts.

I have chosen Scrap Baskets from Kim Brackett's book Scrap Basket Surprises. I knew then it would be just right.

Here are my first blocks

Kim's designs are for 2 1/2 inch strips but I was confident that I could use the layer cake. Some of the pale fabrics wont's be suitable so I will substitute with a little yardage.

These blocks make up well and Kim's instructions are clear, easy to understand and well illustrated. There are lots of terrific designs in Kim's book.

Show and Tell No #1

Whilst the computer was out of action I finished up a couple of quilts. This one is my first effort at *modern* quilting.

The fabric is a honey bun of Soire'e by Lila Tueller for Moda.

It was impossible to use up all the fabric and even though I made a pieced backing I still have some strips leftover!

To balance all those angles I decided to quilt a loopy meander all over it and I just had to use a spotty backing fabric and stripe binding!

I really enjoyed making this quilt which measures 36 x 52 inches and to make my day, it was accepted into the Fresh Modern Quilts Gallery on Flickr.

Sydney Quilt Show 2010

Busy Thimble s Stand

The Show was fantastic! Lots of lovely quilts and plenty of shop stands. Busy Thimbles had a fantastic display and lots of new release fabrics. Their BOMs are incredibly popular - 4 of the ladies I went to the show with are doing at least one!

I rather fancy Park Avenue and Luna Notte - both ranges by 3 Sisters for Moda.

Busy Thimbles are once again involved in Quit Aid for 2010 and their block and finished quilt design are delightful. This year's design is pretty and girly.

Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pictures because my camera is on a fishing holiday in Queensland but there are plenty of images on the NSW Quilt Guild's website.

The prize winning quilts were amazing! One of my favourites was an amateur entry - a large quilt beautifully machine quilted on a domestic sewing machine.

A Caterpillar's Dream by Rose Lewis

Not only was the detailed applique stunning but Rose had intricately quilted the piece, including trapunto butterflies, birds and insects.

Well deserving of a prize. There were quite a few antique quilt tops that had been quilted in modern times on show. I really liked these.

The crowds were incredible - so many people! Trying to get to the stalls was a feat in itself. Of course, there were so many things to look at that I found it quite overwhelming.

I predict that the felt Santa decorations on the Homespun stand will be very popular this year. The pattern is in the 7 August issue.

Other really good stands were Hatched and Patched, Catharina's Country Collection and Giggle Buttons. I did manage to pick up a pincushion pattern for my Pincushion Pass swap partner.

After all that eye candy I'm inspired to start my next quilt!

A Word to the Wise

If you haven't backed up your files lately or updated virus definitions then I recommend that you do.

I'd been talking about buying an external hard drive but hadn't got around to it. Then it happened - a catastrophic failure of the pc hardware. Luckily, I managed to retrieve all my files - this time.

I may not be so lucky next time. So I have a new pc, modem, virus protection and external hard drive.

Lesson learned.

Now I have some catching up to do. I imagine there has been a lot going on while I have been out of action.

I'm off to the Sydney Quilt Show this weekend but won't have much in the way of spending money after having to buy the new pc.

Probably a good thing really.....

There's Nothing New Under the Sun

I have my partner for the Pincushion Pass and I really want to make something nice for her.

After mooching about Flickr I have discovered that if you can think of it - someone has made it into a pincushion. If you doubt my claim then just type Pincushion into the search button - there are 6897 images of them.

Go on, I dare you to look through them all! I wimped out after page 180.

Perhaps I should wait until the Sydney Quilt Show in a couple of weeks in case I see kit or pattern.

There are just so many good ideas in Bloggy Land. I made these wonderful little pincushions from a free design by polka dot pineapple.

The lovely Arlette is impossibly clever at designing all manner of crafty things. Better still, she generously shares her ideas in easy to follow tutorials. Thanks Arlette!

A New Gadget

I have been playing with a new gadget. The Supreme Slider is a Teflon coated sheet with a sticky underside.

I first saw it in action on 365 Days of Free Motion Quilting Filler Designs.

It works too! The quilt slides over the sheet like a dream.

I've also made another set of blocks for our swap. Ruth and Karen's blocks will be in tomorrow's post.

It's fun deciding which blocks to send to each recipient.

Fairholme Quilt Show 2010

I thought you would like to see some of the quilts from the show. This quilt features appliqued Australian wildflowers. The big red blooms are waratah - the state flower of NSW.

This quilt started with a printed panel which was then cut up and embellished with lots of enbroidery/quilting.

Tiny half inch hexagons appliqued. I think this is a design from Australian Patchwork & Quilting. I really liked the diamond pieced border.

Of all the quilts I saw, this is the one I most wanted to make. A simple design really but beautiful fabrics. I think this pattern is made with a layer cake and maybe a jelly roll.

This was one of two quilts in the same design. The other quilt had the colours reversed - blues on yellow. Foundation pieced and quite a dramatic design. Every point perfect!

Another pretty quilt featuring hexagons. I think this is also a design published in Australian Patchwork & Quilting.

This classic design was rendered in modern fabrics and looked much better than my photo. I really liked this quilt and would like to make it.

This is a such a simple design but the fabric combination/colour makes it something special.

I think this is the New Your Beauty pattern, rendered on this occasion in Japanese prints. It's a stunning design that seems to work no matter what style of fabric you use.

Another example of how a simple design is transformed by the judicious choice of fabrics and placement of colour.

Okay, maybe knitters do have a secret code - either way I picked up the needles after a very long time to make a simple scarf from some terrific yarn.

I wouldn't mind buying a copy of Loani Prior's new book Really Wild Tea Cosies. I love the designs.

My bloggy friend Phyllis spins some beautiful yarn and sells it on her Etsy site.

I'm hoping to visit the Fairholme Quilters Exhibition this weekend. They are a very talented group who make fantastic quilts.

You're Invited to a Soiree

I did want any patchworker would do when they can't decide what project to make from *the list*.

I started a completely different one altogether.

Oh well, at least I'm making something and that's a good thing, right?

This is my first foray into Modern Quilting and I'm rather enjoying it. I'm using the leftovers from a honey bun of Soire'e by Lila Tueller for Moda Fabrics.

I made a swap bag from this last year (designed by rachel from p.s.i quilt - she's a quilting rockstar these days) and made a wonderful bloggy friend in Portugal - Ana Maria.

I can see why this white/funky combination is so appealing. It's a fresh, clean look.

In the meantime, I'm changing my mind daily about what to do with my Simple Abundance layer cake. Sigh.

Rachel is using the range to make her pinwheel sampler and Roslyn from bloom made a quilt for Moda Bakeshop with it. Roslyn's blog is simply stunning. She takes such beautiful photographs, has a rose garden to be envious of and makes lovely projects - her stitcheries are perfect!

There is plenty of inspiration and ideas out there. I'm sure I'll find something I just *have* to make.

I thought I'd show you my scrap box. Yep, that's a shoe box and these are my scraps.

Not really trying very hard now am I?

My bloggy friend Gail was telling me about her scraps - 9 boxes all up and I'm guessing they aren't the kind that hold a pair of shoes.

Why am I showing you my scrap box.....well, I'm making scrap blocks for a swap and these blocks are for Lisa and Katie the winners of our first drawer.

Snowbound BOM - February 2010

Here's my little guy for February.

Inexplicably, he has a Bob Hope head - go figure. Just needs a pom pom for his hat.

I didn't appreciate when I started last year's Tisket-Tasket just how fiddly and time consuming these blocks would be. Now I do and make allowances.

It might explain why I dropped the ball on Tisket Tasket.

Anyhoo....

Here's a little something I have been working on for a friend.

I got to play with the Clover yo-yo and flower makers that were a gift from APQ Merritt some time ago. Thanks Merritt, I had a lot of fun with them.

Now it's time to make some blocks for the swap.

APQ Blog Buddies Block Swap

Okay, here we go!

We have had enough positive responses to our idea for a block swap that it's time to get down to details.

We have chosen a simple block which will suit a variety of fabrics from reproduction to modern and everything in between. Use light toned fabrics for the other half of the block.

You can make your blocks from scraps or yardage. Our block will be 8 1/2 inches (includes quarter inch seams).

Each month one or two names will be drawn at random to receive that month's blocks. Details will be published on the APQ Blogging Buddies Swap blog.

The number of blocks to be made each month will depend on how many people join the swap and the aim is for each member to receive enough blocks to make a lap quilt. You can make extra blocks for yourself if you would like your quilt to be larger.

You are free to finish the quilt in any way you choose. You may want to embellish your blocks as well.

Important: Please don't join in unless you can make all the blocks required

Some Rules: (necessary I'm afraid)

1. You must have an active blog and put the swap button on your blog (right click and save)

2. You must post your blocks each month on your blog

3. You will be expected to upload images of your blocks and quilt to our Flickr image group.

4. You must have a postal address that you are willing to share with other members of the swap.

5. You must post your blocks to the monthly winner by the due date.

6. You must acknowledge the blocks you receive in a post on your block.

Here is a picture of a quilt made using this block and 1930s prints.

How do you join? Simply leave a comment here on the APQ Blogging Buddies Swap blog. If enough people join, then the swap will run.

Judging a Book by its Cover

They say you shouldn't but I was smitten when I saw this one online.

I ordered it from Fabric Patch along with some fabric goodies - a Rural Jardin layer cake and Martinique jelly roll using the Christmas money I received from family.

I was eager to open the parcel when it arrived and held my breath as I opened the cover. Oh my....it has some beautiful projects inside. I could - and probably will - make them all!

I was also fortunate to receive some gifts from blogging friends Nora and Christine and it's not even my birthday. I have been spoiled! Thank you both for your kindness and thoughtfulness.

Nora made a beautiful heart to hang in my sewing room, lots of delicious chocolates, a terrific magazine I haven't seen before, a nifty notepad and some amazing fat quarters.

Christine's local quilt shop had a Superbowl Sale and she posted about her great fabric buys. Little did I know that some of the fabric she bought was meant for me!

February Christmas Project

I won the pattern for this pillow from Lola over at ...and Sew On in a giveaway she hosted last year. It was one of three and I had wanted to make it for last Christmas.

Well, it's done now and counts as my February Christmas 2010 project.

The quilting is all done on Farmyard Stack and I just have the binding to sew down. Hope to have a picture for you next weekend along with my February Snowman from Bunnyhill.

After that, it will be time to layout my Simple Abundance quilt with a layer cake from Busy Thimbles. There are some fabulous new products on offer and there is an in-store clearance sale from 11-13 February. I can't wait!

Vintage Sandy is hosting a delightful giveaway with a heart theme which will be drawn on Valentine's Day.

A Flurry of Activity

Not so much here, but certainly in Blogland. There is so much quilting and sewing and blogging going on it's hard to keep up.

Liri has joined us as well as seventhsister26 and I've caught up with Jenn from Purpleheart Orijennals. Have I missed anybody? Please let me know.

Love asked me about a button for the APQ Bloggers. Well, here is my offering. To put this image on your blog, right click on the image and Save Image As . Then add a Picture Gadget via your Layout. The image is 15Kb (very small) and 220 pix wide. Just right for Blogger.

I've been back to work which I must say is seriously cramping my style. Nearly finished the quilting on Farmyard Stack. It s been fun! Free motion - stippling, loopy string, pebbles and stars. Just the last border to go but it's been too hot to sew.

Donations of cool weather will be gratefully accepted.

Those pebbles were quite difficult and used up so much thread!

I can't believe it's almost the end of January - where did the time go? I need to make a decision about my next Christmas project and there will be another Snowman block coming.

Welcome APQ Bloggers

Let's start this post with a big hearty welcome to those lovely folks from APQ who are dipping their toes in the water here for the first time. APQ are deleting all their existing blogs and we have to find new homes. Some have settled on Blogger, others are looking at their options.

One door closes and another opens so we must make the best of it. I have made some wonderful friends through APQ and I hope they will keep in touch with me here.

A parcel arrived in the post this week from my blogging friend Kelli. She has stitched an adorable snowman wall hanging just for me and there is the Layer Cake, Jelly Roll and Charms book by Pam and Nicky Lintott. Whoo-hoo! I was going to buy that book with a gift certificate I received for Christmas. Now I can spend it on fabric.

Thanks Kelli! I really liked the little cupcake pincushion kit, calendar (just the right size for the sewing room) and charm pack too.

It's been too hot to quilt the baby quilt so I did a little hand sewing yesterday. The first block in Anne Sutton's Bunnyhill Designs free BOM for 2010.

I've gone out on a limb with the scheme. I found the background fabric and it made me think of a night sky with snowflakes. Go on...use your imagination!

I chickened out this time and went for blanket stitch applique. At least there's a chance I'll finish this BOM.

I won't be making a quilt with these blocks. Instead, I will split them up into threes or fours and make other things - maybe a wall hanging, table runner, Christmas tote. Haven't decided yet but you'll be the first to know!

OPAM - December Finish

Thank you all for your delightful Christmas wishes!

I don't know about you but I enjoy those few days after Christmas when the hubbub has settled and there seems to be time just for me to spend as I choose.

The fridge is full of leftovers so the family pretty much feed themselves (constantly), there is plenty of chocolate to keep me fuelled and no seems to want me for anything. Bliss!

That means time in the sewing room and here is my December OPAM. It has been rather pleasant to work on all those projects I didn't finish in time for Christmas. Thank goodness my dearest friends have the patience of Job and know that when they receive their Christmas gift in March it is with the best of intentions!

There are a few UFOs on the to do list for 2010 but that's okay.

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments and compliments. I have been quite overwhelmed by your generosity.

I haven't done much sewing of late - nor blog visiting after our pc keeled over in the extreme heat a couple of weekends ago. I wasn't far behind.

I did make this little Christmas bag which featured in Homespun (Vol 8 No 11). The design is by Marg Low and her Santa was made from punchneedle. I substituted applique instead. The finished size is about 7 inches square and I'm filling it with Christmas treats for a friend.

I also made this Christmas heart from Handmade magazine substituting the felt for a reproduction print. I borrowed Leanne's technique by adding some Pellon on the back before stitching the lettering. It gives a nice effect. Thanks Leanne!

It was a real surprise when they asked if they could print my projects in their magazine.

I wasn't sure at first.....don't be ridiculous! Of course I said yes.

Simply Delicious

Sigh. Is there anything more delicious than a layer cake? Okay, chocolate perhaps.

This one is Simple Abundance by Bonnie & Camille for Moda. What clever designers they are and such a pretty colour combination - soft teal, terracotta, sage and cream. Don't get me wrong I still have feelings for charm packs - those flirty cupcakes of the pre-cut fabric world. But oh, those 10 inch squares - so many possibilities.

My layer cake comes from Busy Thimbles at St Ives. It's a wonderful quilt shop and Annalisa, the delightful owner, is a talented quilter who likes reproduction fabrics and English paper-piecing. Visit her blog here.

Busy Thimbles classes and BOMs are very popular and they have contributed to the QuiltAid 2009 quilt project. Twelve shops have each designed a block and a finishing kit. It's in one of my favourite fabric ranges - Faye Burgos' Sachet Potpourri.

I'll be making this quilt designed by Camille called Late Bloomer which featured in Australian Homespun Vol 10 No1. To create the circles I plan to use the aluminium foil method.

The miniature stars in reproduction fabric are now finished with some simple quilting using YLI thread. I haven't used this thread before and chose it because it was a good colour match. I like the wooden cone that in comes on and it was nice to sew with. My favourite quilting thread so far is King Tut.

Good news!

My Friendship Bag arrived and it's just delightful.

It was made by Jennifer from the United States and you can visit her blog here. As you can see, Jennifer sewed on the little yellow flowers and beads. Isn't she clever!

The colours are so pretty and there are self threading needles, some fat quarters, a message note pad. Jennifer has even sent along some of the beads she used on the bag.

I just love it! Thank you so much Jennifer.

Now back to work on a UFO.

Small things amuse small minds

This little sweetie is just 12 1/2 inches - well it will be when it's finished. Each star block is only 3 inches.

It's a design by Ann Hermes and I used the lovely reproduction fabrics purchased at the quilt show. Ann uses snippets of vintage fabrics in her projects.

Thanks to some handy hints from Ann this quilt was easier to manage than my first effort.

I do like miniatures.

I have just discovered that Shabby Fabrics have a blog. I do like this shop and they have lots of lovely fabrics and projects.

Quilt Show Report and a Prize

I am becoming rather well known for forgetting to take pictures at quilt shows and the Wentworth Quilters Exhibition was no different.

Sorry folks, one day I will get my act together.

It was a terrific show on what was a spectacularly windy day. Congratulations to all involved. There is so much work involved in one of these. The venue was historic Linnwood House.

I did have a little shopping spree at the stalls. Shop of the Day was Patchwork Plus from Miranda. I bought these.

Scrap Basket Surprises is a terrific book by Kim Brackett. Her blog is Magnolia Bay Quilts. All of the projects use 2 1/2 inch scrap strips or jelly rolls. I'd like to make all the projects featured. Nice work Kim.

I also picked up some reproductions fabrics for making Ann Hermes miniature quilts, some Metro Goes Au Naturel fat quarters and a couple of pincushions.

A little while ago I entered Lena's giveaway over at LeKa Quilts and I won a consolation prize. It arrived this week and it's as sweet as sweet can be.

OPAM Finish - September

After not finishing anything last month I thought I should make the effort and finish two things for September. This is a sewing machine cover and I am rather pleased with the final result.

I'm also going to count the little bag I made for the Friendship Bag Swap. I'll be posting this swag of goodies tomorrow. I'm not allowed to reveal the secret identity of my swap partner but I think I can safely say she is in Europe.

Stitches & Craft Show - Sydney 2009

The glory days of the show are gone but there were still plenty of good things to see.

Catharina's Country Collection was a terrific stall with a fantastic display of quilts - especially her BOMs. This one is Pond House by Lynette Anderson.

They were one of only a handful of quilt stalls this time. That's because the quilt show is the big event in June.

For me, the top floor held all the surprises - Cloth Fabric, Kristen Doran, Ink & Spindle, Pippiejoe, Audrey & Maude - just to name a few. It was fabulous to see Tara Badcock's tea cosies - so much better *in person*.

I bought some fabrics from Ink & Spindle which I will probably use to make some bags

and some cards from Pippijoe that I plan to use for Christmas. She also had fantastic fabrics.

I saw the platypus designed by Kate from Two Little Banshees . The pattern was featured in Australian Homespun Vol 10 No 1. These are my version made for Jen's new baby Tamsyn after she posted on her blog about how much she enjoys seeing the platypus that live on the creek near her mum's house.

Kate's new design is a cute-as-a-button caterpillar!

Well, at least I thought so. Put the quilting aside to work on Farmyard Stack. This is an easy quilt to put together. Square in a Square blocks next, then four patch.

Discovered the website for Living Creatively - okay I'm behind the times on this one but lots of interesting stuff including this

A bracelet made from typewriter keys from Mrs Smith jewellery. Unfortunately, the link on the website is broken.

Also featured is Tara Badcock from The Teacosy Revolution. Tara is a textile artist and her work is exciting. She has a particular fondness for creating or transforming the ubiquitous tea cosy and some of her works will be on display at the Sydney Stitches & Craft Show.

You can read the on-line article about Tara here. I'm looking forward to seeing Tara's work up close. She uses an interesting combination of textures and free motion embroidery in her pieces - even the odd exotic feather.

Last, but not least, I *discovered* Ink & Spindle - three incredibly talented Melbourne textile designers. They will be at the Stitches & Craft Show also. Here's their blog.

Farewell Old Friend

Vale faithful Pfaff. We've had so many good times together.

How I remember fondly all our sewing adventures - endless kids' costumes, t-shirts, fancy track suits and that bathing suit I never wore. You understood my fascination for Justknits and Knitwit; never criticised my insatiable appetite for cotton spandex and stretch lycra.

I will always remember you. *Sniff*

On a brighter note....these wonderful goodies came in the mail today.

I can't wait to give them both a good run. Guess what? I won my first giveaway - from Lola at and Sew on. Thanks Lola! I am looking forward to receiving my gifts.

My Sewing Room

AmandaJean over at crazymomquilts has invited us to share our sewing space. Here's mine.

When I'm working at my sewing machine I look out over the garden.

Storage for threads and and display for knick knacks.

Fabric storage, books and sewing notions. A comfortable chair for hand sewing and a spot for a cup of tea. I have a Horn cutting table (seen here in the closed position).

These nifty containers came from Ikea some years ago.

I'm quite fortunate to have such a lovely light-filled space in which to play.

The lovely LeKa from LeKa Quilt has given me a friendship award. Thank you LeKa! I am enjoying your blog and projects as well as learning Norwegian (with a little help from Google Translator).

Did you know that the Norwegian word for fabric/material is *stoff*? That the English word *stuff* comes from the Old French *estoffe* - a quilted material worn under chain mail.

Now, the Normans (Norsemen) were Viking conquerors of Northern France. They also did a job on the Saxon English in 1066. See, I remembered something from my high school history lessons.

Okay, well I thought I thought it was interesting.

Making Friends Again

I thought it was high time I became reacquainted with the scrap quilt top I finished last year. It's a combination of hand and machine piecing. I'm using a cotton batting that can be machine and/or hand quilted. I was thinking I might hand quilt the diamonds. Maybe. We'll see.

Also made a start on one of the baby quilts I'm making. It's called Farmyard Stack.
