precuts

These Arkansas Traveller blocks have been so much fun to make. I’ve used a jellyroll of Kansas Troubles Winter. The warm tones seemed like a good choice for a cold weather quilt to snuggle under.

There should be enough strips left over to sash the blocks. Not sure if the striped pattern strips from the roll will be sufficient to bind the quilt. We’ll have to wait and see. There are always options.

In the meantime, I’m looking for inspiration to use with these. Did I really buy this many precuts? It would appear so.

points

There’s been some improvement with aligning the points and only a couple of sessions of stitch unpicking.

Starting to get the hang of these blocks.

Searched through the stash (it’s one the meagre side) and nothing suitable for a border on the Tiffany Stars quilt.  A planned trip to a new- to -me quilt shop was derailed by some awful weather on Saturday.

It was only 9 degC at 10am so best to stay indoors.

rsc 2024 june

Blue is the colour for this month’s Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2024
I think this is my favourite block so far.

foundation

Time for a new project and a technique I’ve never tried before. Foundation paper piecing.

Happy to Be Scrappy is making an Arkansas Traveller quilt, hers is hand pieced and for the 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge. It’s a gorgeous quilt too.

Then I saw Karen’s version over on her blog and that was it.  The quilt gods had spoken.

My last paper piecing quilt (English paper piecing) took seven years to finish so this will be machine pieced. At least three points are right. Just about.

There’ll be no unpicking as the stitch size is far too tiny and I can live with it being a bit off. Those of you who are more accomplished probably have a twitch in your left eye right now. Sorry about that.

The pattern for this comes from freshly pieced.com.  The Summer Sampler series. I’m using a jelly roll of Kansas Troubles Winter form many years ago so my blocks are slightly smaller. The foundation had to be resized to accommodate the jelly roll. To get a block that finishes at 12 and half inches you need to cut the diamond pieces 2 and five-eighths. My strips are 2 and half.

I’ll get 16 blocks out of the jellyroll. Not sure if I’ll make extra scrappy blocks or use the leftover strips as a border. Plenty of time to decide.

It’s a bit weird putting paper through the sewing machine.

jazz

A friend’s daughter will soon graduate as a First Responder so I wanted to make a quilt to thank her for choosing a career path in the service of the community.

This fabric reminds me of Anna Marie Horner or Tula Pink. I don’t think it’s either though. I quilted a vine and leaf design in a multi colour thread ( thanks karensquilting for the inspiration).

It measures 55 x 44 inches.
