binding

What I'm doing now....

Binding is one of my favourite tasks in quilt making. I suspect the same pleasure is derived from hand quilting.

Yesterday I visited an antique quilt exhibition at Avalon Uniting Church. Thanks to Cherry Pie Designs for posting the notice about it. Avalon is a beach side village.

The quilts ranged from the late 1800s to the 1950s and the variety of designs was very interesting. Once again, no pictures were allowed but I'm sure you've seen plenty of antique quilts.

I'm always struck by the bold colours in the fabrics, now faded. My favourites were a Carolina Lily in pink and green; a Carpenter's Wheel in what looked like Minick & Simpson fabrics (I suppose they too have been inspired by antique quilts); and two indigo and white quilts.

A delightful way to spend the afternoon.

  1. I have a love/hate relationship with binding. It's slow and simple and a little therapeutic, but it can also be tedious and means I won't be working on that quilt anymore...

  2. I enjoy doing bindings, it is nice sitting with some handwork. Wonder why I have so many to finish?
Seeing any quilts is always a great way to spend an afternoon.

  3. I plan on binding my applique quilt this week and I don't mind doing them. I wouldn't say I love doing it, though! DH & I were just talking about taking a little camping trip around Texas to visit some relatives and I want to visit the Texas Quilt Museum. I hope we follow through on this - maybe this month! We want to go when the wildflowers are blooming, which is usually the end of March or the beginning of April.

  4. I enjoy the binding, I can do it when I watch TV after dinner. I like to keep my hands busy with some stitching. And a finish means I get to start on a new quilt. A quilt show is a fun way to spend the day, sounds like it was a good one!

  5. You and all these commentors and their love of bindings. I know where to send mine next time I finish a quilt! (Of course, I run the risk of not getting it back...) I don't mind it, but by the time I get there, I'm so ready to be done with it, I get impatient and that makes me not like it. When will we get to see the front?

  6. I'm with Katie :) If you lived closer I'd keep you supplied in binding work! What I like about the binding is knowing that the quilt is almost done! Funny, I don't mind sitting for hours hand quilting, but the evening or two it takes to stitch the binding seems to take too long!
It sound like you had a lovely afternoon viewing the antique quilts.

  7. I´m a little with all your commentor.... I don´t mind sewing the binding, because it´s the last move to have a finish quilt but it can be boring, yes!. Usually I use that time to start thinking on a new quilt!.
