Time to start working on the next quilt top in the pile.

Except for the sashings, this top is hand-pieced using the English paper piecing method.

The design was inspired by a series of antique quilts which featured in an issue of American Patchwork & Quilting magazine from years ago.

I also liked all the patriotic quilts made by my online quilting friends that have featured on their blogs over the many years we have been sharing our projects.

Although Australia is best known for green & gold the Australian flag is actually red, white and blue.

The stars are Crux, a constellation in the southern sky and the large star is the Commonwealth Star - it’s seven points representing the five states and two territories that form the Commonwealth of Australia. Finally, the Blue Ensign, with the crosses of St George (England), St Andrew (Scotland) and St Patrick (Ireland).

I’m using my Westalee rulers to quilt it - the quilt that is, not the flag.

I think I’m going to run out of thread and as we are not allowed to travel more than 5km from our homes, a quick trip to Spotlight is out of the question.  Let’s see what happens.

  1. sorry you will be running out of thread! that quilt looks like you put a lot of work into it - I have done quite a few EPP quilts and really need to start another! I was looking through all my papers and templates earlier thinking about it.

  2. Love your red, blue and white quilt, Ann. It is a lovely pattern. I particularly love the red fabric. By the time lockdown is over you will have run out of all your thread. =) Seriously though, hope you have enough....perhaps ordering online.....and hoping lockdown will be over sooner rather than much later. Enjoy your quilting.

  3. Beautiful quilt! I vaguely remember it from a few years back, but not the whole thing, just teaser photos! The flag explanation is cool - I saw the stars seemed randomly placed and it never occured to me to question why, but now I know! And I do hope you are able to order some thread, or is mail delivery suspended? (That might be nice to delay bills!) I know that's just not the same, but I have said thanks many times in the last year and a half for all the things we can still manage with the internet, no matter how much I curse it sometimes for all the distractions it provides! I'm looking forward to seeing how that rule brings this quilt to an even more amazing piece of art!

  4. Beautiful quilt top! I hope you don't run out of thread! Stay busy, stay safe.

  5. Love how this top came out. Hoping the thread will get you through. Is there a way to order it from your shop and pop it in the post for you? Stay safe.

  6. Your quilt is absolutely gorgeous! I've never been brave enough to even try paper piecing! I too think maybe you should consider mail ordering some thread. I've learned it works well for me! Again, I love your quilt! ---"Love'

Thank you for stopping by.
